We are in the middle of the summer holiday; this is a crucial time that can tip the balance of applications. Here are some of the events that can give students the advantage they need to develop a strong application. Let's get started.
The Immerse Essay Competition: For students who want to bolster their CV, as well as earn a full or partial scholarship to a summer school in Oxbridge, this competition is perfect for you. There is a vast number of topics, ranging from AI to Media Studies to Architecture, so there is something for everyone. There are also different age categories, so everyone from 13+ can take part. Getting into a paid summer school is typically something we don't advise, but if a student were to win a scholarship to go to one, this would be a different story. The best part of all of this? The entries are maximum 550 words, so students can certainly get it done before the deadline. Even if you don't win, it is certainly a powerful way of expressing interest in a subject beyond the classroom and gaining some knowledge that will help you stand out from the crowd. The deadline for the competition is 31st August.
Holiday workshops: Stories from maths:If your child is interested in pursuing maths or a related degree, then this event is a must. This event places students with like-minded peers in a four-hour workshop led by Ioanna Georgiou, a phenomenal maths communicator. The workshop will cover some of the amazing stories, questions and answers related to maths. From everything about the maths behind the tube network, to who worked out pi, students will certainly leave with a new perspective on the subject. Some of that knowledge can be an amazing launchpad for a personal statement. It is this upcoming Friday (4th August) so move fast.
What is Psychology?: As students' progress from GCSE to A level, many subjects that were not available for students to study become options. Psychology is one of them. In this video, we run through what Psychology is and isn't, what it is like to study at A level and if it is right for you. As one of the most popular subjects to be taken at both university and A level, this social science can open doors students might not know even exist.
What about Government and Politics?: In the same vein as above, this video will give you an excellent breakdown on Government and Politics at A level. This is another incredibly popular course that students take, and it provides a strong foundation for studying it at university. If your child is considering studying this in the future, consider this video as the definitive introduction.
HSPS?: One of the most frequent questions that students ask us at A&J Education is if Philosophy, Politics and Economics is taught at Cambridge. The answer is no, but the closest subject is "Human, Social and Political Sciences (HSPS)". In this video, we demystify what this subject is, guided by a student who studied it herself.

Jorge Pereira CamposCEO, A&J Education · Psychologist · Researcher Why we mistake relief for safety (and why it matters) Do you ever avoid something difficult just to stop your heart from racing? So I did what I’ve done in many moments of my adult life: I swiped the email into the archive and avoided...
